Gum health plays a crucial role in maintaining a strong foundation for your teeth and overall oral wellness. Unfortunately, gum disease is extremely common—affecting nearly half of American adults in some form, from mild gingivitis to more serious conditions like periodontitis. Left untreated, gum infections can lead to bone loss in the jaw, tooth mobility or loss, and even systemic health concerns. That’s why it’s essential to detect and manage gum disease early. Comprehensive care options are available in-office for all stages, helping patients restore their oral health with minimal disruption to their daily lives.
With decades of clinical experience, Dr. Richard Weimar approaches every dental procedure with precision and a commitment to patient-focused care. During routine exams, your gums will be evaluated for early signs of disease. When caught early—during the reversible gingivitis stage—treatment can effectively stop disease progression. If allowed to advance, gum disease becomes a chronic issue that requires ongoing management rather than a cure.
In the early stages of gum disease, bacteria and plaque can slip beneath the gum line, attacking tissue and bone. A deep cleaning procedure targets these areas by removing buildup and smoothing the roots of your teeth, encouraging the gums to reattach and heal properly.
This surgical approach is reserved for more advanced cases. Infected tissue is carefully removed, tartar is cleared away from below the gum line, and the underlying bone is reshaped to eliminate deep pockets where bacteria thrive. This not only halts disease progression but also supports the long-term health of your mouth.
After initial treatment—especially following osseous surgery—ongoing cleanings every three months are vital. These specialized appointments help keep bacteria at bay, monitor healing, and prevent reinfection.
Treating gum disease is essential not just for your smile, but for your overall well-being. To make the experience as comfortable as possible, sedation options are available to ease anxiety and reduce discomfort. Best of all, patients can receive all their periodontal care in one convenient location—no outside referrals needed. With proactive care and regular checkups, your gums and teeth can stay strong, healthy, and beautiful for years to come.
Dr. Richard Weimar is a native of Minnesota raised in, as he says with a smile, the vacation wonderland of Fridley. He attended the University of Minnesota from which he received his BA degree in 1978 and his DDS degree in 1983. He opened his practice the following year and has provided exceptional dental care to the Maple Grove and Brooklyn Park communities for over 30 years. He holds memberships in the Academy of Osseointegration, International Congress of Oral Implantology, and the American Society of Dental Anesthesiology. He is accomplished in almost all phases of dentistry, with his mission to create a dental office where patients can receive almost all procedures in one office. He seeks to minimize the number of times patients are sent to specialty offices for treatment, thereby creating smoother, more efficient treatment for patients with complicated dental issues.
